Biography

Geoff Smith is a UK-based writer, IT professional, and author of the Short Guides UK series — concise, compassionate mental health guides written with a UK focus. Titles so far include Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and Depression.

With decades of experience in IT — spanning software development, management, and digital consultancy — Geoff brings analytical and problem-solving skills to his writing, making complex topics accessible in plain English.

Geoff also writes from a place of deep personal and family experience. He lives with Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Depression, experiences symptoms of ADHD and autism, and has been through two inpatient stays as well as several suicide attempts across his 60 years. He is also a parent of children with ADHD and lost his brother to schizophrenia at the age of 26 in 1987.

These experiences have shaped Geoff’s lifelong commitment to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and providing resources that combine empathy with practical advice.

Guided by the series tagline Clear, Concise, Compassionate, Geoff’s mission is to offer reassurance and hope to readers across the UK, showing that even in the darkest times, recovery and meaning are possible.
